Saltcoats runner does his town proud in Canada
A Saltcoats man has been honoured with a day to celebrate his achievements in Victoria, Canada.
Al Howie, 65, also known as the Tartan Spartan was born in Saltcoats but moved to Canada in 1972 to marry a Canadian woman.
During his time there he made a name for himself running, most famously running across Canada from St John's to Victoria.
He also ran a cross-Canada trek called Tomorrow Run '91 which raised $527,400 for a children's charity. The trek saw him run the equivalent of two and a half marathons every day for two months.
It is for this Victoria will proclaim tomorrow, September 1, Tomorrow Run '91 Day, the 20th anniversary of the feat.
Al never lost his Saltcoats roots, holding on to his Scottish accent and wearing the flag on his running shorts.
