Saltcoats owners urged to have pets microchipped for Christmas
Ever spent loads on toys for your pampered pet’s Christmas, only to find they’re more interested in the wrapping?
The local Cats Protection branch is urging people to have their pets microchipped for Christmas as a long-term gift.
Nina Chisholm, secretary at North Ayrshire Cats Protection, which is run by volunteers in Saltcoats, came up with the suggestion.
She said: “My idea was to promote the idea of getting your pet a microchip implanted as lifelong gift, rather than spending money on toys or treats for Christmas that don't last.
“It could be the best thing that they ever get for their pet.
“If all of the strays we dealt with were chipped, we'd be able to help far more of them find their way home.
“Currently we have 11 strays in our care, and over 20 strays waiting to come in to care, so it's a massive problem.
“And if the strays that we have in care could be reunited with their owners then we would have space to bring other cats in need in from the bad weather."
Nina added that when missing cats are reported to her branch, people always wish they'd had their pet chipped before.
She also warned that no-one can guarantee that their pet won't wander.
