Saltcoats' own 'Our Talking Wall' unveiled on promenade

The iconic "Our talking wall" has been officially opened at Saltcoats promenade.

The project sees the thoughts, hopes and views of local people etched into granite plaques and mounted on the wall, and Councillor Ronnie McNicol praised the initiative at its launch, and councillors, officials and local people involved in it all attended.

Irvine Bay Regeneration Company worked with the local community and local schools to engage people in thinking about their memories, hopes and aspirations for the coast. Pupils from the local schools were involved in workshops about their favourite memories of the beach, as well as those of their parents and grandparents.

There was street consultation on Dockhead Street and people were asked about their thoughts and hopes for the area. This resulted in hundreds of great quotes. A selection of these have been chosen to be etched on to these granite plaques which have become "Our talking wall".

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: "We hope that when people walk along this beautiful promenade, the wall will become alive and these quotes will bring a smile to our faces and help us to think of the good things about this area and the stunning beaches we have."

'Our talking wall' is designed to link with the "Talking images" mural at Ardrossan, where pupils at Ardrossan Academy and the local community have been working with artist Alison Thomas to create the mural at the site of the old St Peters School.

One of my memories of Saltcoats Beach was earning some pocket money on school holidays working for Jimmy White, he had little ponies that visiting families paid a sixpense for there children to have a ride on the ponies, I just lead the ponies up and down the beach.

I was looking at your Saltcoats Talking Wall but I don't remember that wall is it  between Saltcoats and Ardrossan ? We always went swimming when the tide was in going over the railway bridge, the bridge on the side of Saltcoats and Stevenston, never on the Adrossan side. The visitors would throw in the little silver threepenny pieces and the sixpence pieces and we would dive in and pick them up, another way to get pocket money

Cheers,

Ron Fitzsimons.

Hi, I like the idea of the Talking Wall. My Talking Wall, it is the Skype program on the internet, not as permanent as your Talking Wall, but, I leave my foot print all around the world on Skype, Australia, Brazil, Germany, China, Japan, New Zealand.Ireland,England. A good thought, a joke to make someone laugh and spread a little sunshine in there life goes a long way and leaves an indelible impression in their life.

Cheers,

Ron Fitzsimons.
