BURNS'S SHOE SHOP, CHAPELWELL ST.

by JAMES BURNS

Reading through this website for some information, I noticed the old picture of a Butchers shop situated on Chapelwell St. .

I immediately recognised it as the same location for my father's old family shoe business, which replaced the butchers in the late 1970's, and florished there for quite a few years.

The family business name is Charles Burns and Sons est 1867 in Kilwinning. (  see S1 kilwinning / memories for more details )

Now about the old outdoor bathing pool !!! that was the reason for me to learn to swim, I was watching the people diving of the diving board and some jerk pushed me in and I could not swim, so i just sank and kept jumping from the bottom and shouting help until someone jumped in and fished me out. I was never one to panic in any situation. I loved the beach and we could always go over the Bridge and get a sandwich and a bowl of soup from my grannie McCulloch, who's house was only 3 houses away from the Railway bridge. Cheers, Ron Fitzsimons.

I remember the butcher shop in Chapelwell St. I used to work in the old Post Office just across the road. The thing I remember most was the sign in the shop : "We are pleased to meet you with meat to please you." Very catchy I thought.

Do either of you two remember William Palmer Little and Margaret Emma Simmonds or any of their families. I came to saltcoats to search but I made the mistake of coming mid winter. lol It was so cold I became was ill and had to go home.

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
