Saltcoats on the North Ayrshire coast takes its name from the town's earliest industry, harvesting salt from sea water, which thrived with other early industries including coal mining, fishing and handloom weaving. The town enjoyed huge popularity with holidaymakers from Glasgow and beyond up until the 1960s, and featured Scotland's largest tidal pool, with regular entertainment on the shore. Today Saltcoats is a thriving commuter town with a strong sense of community, and has close links with Stevenston and Ardrossan with which it forms the Three Towns.
